Checklist: Upgrade a DotNetNuke Database from SQL Server 2005 to 2008 (optionally 2008 R2)

Use this checklist if your Microsoft SQL Server running DotNetNuke is still version 2005 and you need 2008.
  • Figure Out your Scenario

    Depending on your situation (you might have admin-rights on your server or not) your options are different. So far this checklist covers the following scenarios:
    • Local System (for testing etc.) using WebMatrix or similar
    • Own Web server, where you have admin-permissions
    • Website hosted by a hosting company
  • Upgrade the Database on a Local System or on a web server, to which you have admin-rights

  • Install a new instance of SQL Server (optionally Express, and probably R2)

  • Move the database from the old instance to the new one (use detach/attach)

  • Change mapping in DotNetNuke

  • Upgrade the Database on your external hosting provider
